![]() ![]() Living in a low trust, high crime society eventually impacts all but the very most insulated-our politicians, for example.Īfter this episode, I cannot trust anything else this man puts forward. While he pushes "restorative justice" on poor ppl like the victim in this case, gullible enough to actually feel like he harmed the thief by reporting the theft (the thief got his felony reduced to a misdemeanor and spent only a month in jail, rather than the years he could have), the host himself no doubt lives in a place where such consequences will be unlikely to fall to him. Do you want to live in a place where ppl think it's not a big deal to cut locks off bikes so they can take and resell them? Where you must lock your doors at all times so no one walks in and robs you? I bet the host doesn't. Anything that undermines that sense undermines social trust for all of us. It is good that stealing and lying are looked down upon.Ĭivil society requires that thievery is considered bad and people should want to refrain from it. We all have times when we feel like a fraud. (The case itself is one where it is a rich young man stealing from a man of less means). This week, two ways of understanding the mind. No one notices that the thief is suffering the consequences of being a selfish and dishonest person. The host then goes on to suggest that this situation evidences our need to move to a restorative justice model, where victim and criminal can meet and understand the criminal better. The host, the victim, and the thief all see the thief as the real victim in the case. The thief was an entitled young man who still sees himself as the victim bc after he was caught no one wanted to hire him (rightfully!) and he was socially embarrassed (good!). He sees it as the impact his actions in reporting and theft and trying to get his property back had on the thief, as if he had done something wrong. The host questions whether justice really was served, and the victim actually cries, expressing regret for the impact getting caught for stealing gas upon the thief. I just finished the episode featuring a thief and his victim meeting for the first time and discussing the crime and it's consequences. ![]()
